Abstract:When lightning current transmits along transmission line, the weak points of insulation may be broken down which will result in short circuit faults of line. At this time, for the current fault location method, the location of the lightning location can be obtained by time-domain characteristics of traveling wave, however the precise fault point is failed to be got. Therefore, considering the condition that the positions of lightning and fault are different for HVDC transmission line, a fault location method based on time-domain and frequency-domain information of traveling waves is put forward in this paper. Firstly, the lightning position is located using time-domain information of two-terminal traveling wave. And then the line section where fault occurs is judged according to the relation between the lightning stroke point and the fault point. Finally, the fault distance can be calculated based on the single-terminal/ two-terminal values of the nature frequencies component reflecting the certain transmission path of fault-traveling wave. Simulation results based on PSCAD/EMTDC indicate that the fault distance can be estimated accurately based on the presented location method under the situation that the positions of lightning and fault are different for HVDC transmission line, and the locating performance is not affected by lightning stroke positions and fault positions, fault resistances and noise, provided with great applicability and practical value.
